Moonstone: Physical and Metaphysical Qualities
The mystical glow in both Moonstone and the related gemstone Labradorite are from the mineral Feldspar, which is also found in meteorites on the moon. Most Moonstone comes from deposits in Sri Lanka. The luminous glow emanating from the core of the gem is reflective of the ethereal glow from the full, round moon. Recognizing this, the ancients called this gem Moonstone.
Feldspar, known as the building blocks of the Earth’s crust, is formed from a combination of nourishing minerals like potassium, sodium, and calcium. It is the occurrence of Feldspar that creates the opalescent shimmer we see in Moonstone. Moonstone can be found in different color tones of peach, gray, green, and white, always with its give-away sheen. Then there is Blue Flash, or Rainbow Moonstone.
Moonstone is associated with all things feminine
Moonstone’s inner glow, or adularescence is known to offer the serene wisdom of a loving mother. It nourishes and calms the mind, much like the beautiful moon shining its gentle light against a midnight sky.
Moonstone is associated with the moon and the earth, it stirs our finer sentiments, offering us a bit of its transcendent iridescence while reminding us there are glories beyond our vision.
Elena's Insights
Having been called the ‘Moonstone Gem Queen’ by my customers, I take it seriously to keep the quality of all our gemstones exceptional and especially Rainbow Moonstone.
There are varied grades of Rainbow Moonstone, ranging from a milky thick cloud to an almost transparent mist. The sweet spots are the ones with the most obvious brilliant inner blue glow. Having been called the ‘Moonstone Gem Queen’, by my customers, I take it seriously to keep the quality of all our gemstones exceptional, especially Rainbow Moonstone.
Sometimes we find moonstones with actual rainbows of golden, pink or lime shooting through the shimmering white background. These are more rare and prized.
Whether in a larger Moonstone designer piece or even in our smaller, lower-end moonstone designs, we assure you the highest glowing Moonstone and Labradorite that you will ever find.
When I travel to India to meet with my artisans and gemstone suppliers, I take the time to carefully choose each individual moonstone and labradorite gem for our jewelry designs.
