Description
Amethyst is a semiprecious gemstone variety of hexagonal crystal quartz prized for its violet color. The name comes from the Greek word for sober, amethystos (αμέθυστος), and according to Greek mythology the stone was formed from the tears of Dionysus.
Color
The color of Amethyst ranges from a light lavender or pale violet to a deep purple and may exhibit secondary hues of red and blue. High-quality amethyst is found in Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Uruguay. “Deep Siberian” amethyst has a deep purple hue with blue and red secondary hues. “Rose de France” is noted for a light shade lavender or lilac. While amethyst is usually cool and in the blue range of purple, there are red purple varieties that are sometimes referred to as “raspberry.”
